Biography
-I was born in Kaustinen about 150km to the inland from Vaasa. In my childhood the summers were warm and sunny but every now and then there were hard thunderstorms. Because I lived in the countryside it was normal to work in agriculture. Even if our family had no farm, there was much to do in the fields of our relatives.
-I started school in 1952. At that time the schoolsystem was a little bit different from what it is today. Everyone should have seven years of compulsory education. Anyway after sex years in the normal school I moved to lower secondary school and I continued directly to upper secondary school and took my matriculation examination in 1965. Then it was time to do my national military service. I did it mainly in Kajaani and partly in Hamina.
-After the service I wanted to go to study. My first idea was to try to get into the university of Jyvskyl in order to study in the faculty of Sport and Health Sciences. But there were many others to try to get into the same place. And unfortunately I was not among those accepted. Today, when I have seen how hard work the physical education teachers do, I am pleased not to be in that career. My other alternative to begin studying mathematics came truth, because I did not need any entrance-exam in order to get in.
-In 1966 I moved to Helsinki. I lived in many different places. But for the four last years I was in Kruununhaka close to the city-centre only one kilometer from the railway-station. The two first years I studied quite intensively and the following two I didn`t achieve very much. But the last two years I worked very hard again. And in 1972 I had finished my studies and took my Master degree. Except mathematics I had grades also in physics, chemistry and statistics.
-My quite a long stay in the Finnish capital did that Helsinki became as a hometown. In the area of the city centre the map was not needed. I visited maybe all the famous places such as the house of Parliament, the National museum, the National theatre, the Opera and the Olympic stadium. There I was for instance following the European championship in track&field in 1971.
-When I was finished my studies in 1972 I had an idea to search work in capital-area and maybe stay there the rest of my life. Anyway my first working-place became my homevillage Kaustinen. There I worked for two years. My pupils were partly known even my own relatives. Anyway I liked to work there. Nowadays it is quite hard to imagine my first pupils are today about 45 years of age. In order to continue as a teacher I needed to complete my studies. And in 1974 I was again going to Helsinki. At this time I had to do my teacher-training.
-And I it was time to take more study-loan and and begin again with a lot of hard work. In the spring 1975 I had all exams needed in order to search an ordinary job as a teacher of mathematics. In 1975 in Helsinki there were all the leaders of the world, I was by the Mannerheimintie following when such the famous persons as the Presidents Leonid Breznev and Gerald Ford were driving past. I remember another detail of this last stay in Helsinki. A fresh student of our neighbouring village Veteli was one day visiting our apartment in Liisankatu in order to write a speech for minister Paavo Vyrynen. The student in question was the becoming Prime Minister Esko Aho.
-Even if I still would have find job in Helsinki, anyway my first working-place as a competent teacher became Lahti. There I was the years 1975-1979. During that time more exactly in 1978 there was the world championship in crosscountry-skiing. I lived one kilometre from the ski-centre, so I had easy to walk there and follow the competions. The grounds surrounding ski-center got very known for me. Many times I was skiing on the hilly tracks of Salpausselk. In spite of many good things in Lahti I didnt like live there more. But to move to Vaasa was anyway a chance.
-In the autumn 1979 I started Working In a lower secondary school close to the bus-station. The school was called Vuorikadun ylaste. Three years ago our school and another lower secondary school namely Onkilahden ylaste joined and the new name is Vyrinkaupungin koulu. My pupils are teenagers i.e. they are 13-16 years of age. In the 80s we had in mathematics and languages so called level-groups. Many teachers liked that system. But anyway the authorities took the old systems without any levels back. In big schools it is possible at least partly to divide the pupils in the way, which reminds of former level-groups.
-When I came to Vaasa I had an idea Vaasa would have been quite Swedish-speaking, a little bit in the same way as Pietarsaari. But very fast I noticed the Finnish language was totally dominant everywhere. Actually Swedish can be heard only in market square and in some shops close to the square. On the outskirts of the town, it is very seldom if ever you can hear Swedish. Anyway sometimes I ran into the occasions I would have needed Swedish. And in years 89-95 I studied this language very intensively only to notice I cant use it actively. Anyway I can read Swedish newspapers and watch Swedish TV.
-In 1996 I bought a computer. And most of my freetime I sit at my computer. I gather and save different kinds of sport-statistics. I have my homepage to take care of and I write via links sport-articles to some other pages. I would have hard to imagine how to manage more without the computer. On other freetime-hobby I have jogging. When I came to Vaasa I liked more skiing. But gradually I was forced to notice our city was very poor of snow so I changed my skis to jogging-shoes already more than 10 years ago.
